Proper preparation of the area to be seeded is critical. The area should be graded and smoothed over with suitable topsoil. The soil pH should be between 5.5 to 7 with a minimum of 6% organic material content. The area should be free of stones larger than 1, and also free of other extraneous materials that would be harmful to plant growth. Any flower beds or other shrubbery, either planted or the beds, should be marked out. An automatic irrigation system is highly recommended and should be installed prior to planting. It is important that the top soil be thoroughly soaked prior to seeding. Careful watering of the dirt for 2-3 days prior to seeding will enhance the success and germination of the seed. The dirt should be damp 4-5 inches down but not muddy. If you walk over the surface and nothing significant sticks to your shoes this is about right. If the damp surface dirt sticks to your shoes and there is dry dirt visible in the foot prints the soil is too dry. When the soil is too dry the lower dry layers will draw the moisture away from the seed thus drying out the mulch/seed application. Proper moisture preparation will stimulate the seed roots downward. This will establish your lawn quicker and the results will be a healthier, fuller lawn. Soil analysis is highly recommended prior to seeding.
